Northern Ireland’s living traditions on an international festival stage.

Tommy’s music formed part of Northern Ireland at the Smithsonian, a programme of the 2007 Smithsonian Folklife Festival. The institution’s own archive preserves a record of his appearance on the Lagan Stage on 8 July.

A place in the festival archive

The Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections catalogue a sound recording under the names of The Low Country Boys and Tommy Sands. It belongs to the Northern Ireland section of the festival’s records, placing the performance within a wider presentation of the region’s cultural traditions.

Two Washington chapters

This festival appearance preceded Tommy, Moya and Fionán’s 2008 Library of Congress concert. The two events offer separate chapters in the story of bringing Northern Ireland’s music to American audiences. The Smithsonian reference below identifies the historical recording; access to archive recordings is managed by the institution.
